What is the Islamic view on non-consensual sex?

Sexual intercourse is a joint right between spouses based on consent and it is unlawful to engage in any sexual act without the consent of the spouse. This is rooted in the understanding that every person has a God given right to own his/her body and hence violation of that is forbidden.(Quran 9: 41, 9:111) In addition to this, it should be noted that the spouse should not be considered a piece of property, but rather he/she is one that is a partner in life and in compassion as outlined by the Quran and prophetic traditions. For instance, the Quran says, “Your wives are your garment and you are a garment for them." (2:187) Furthermore, even if there is a right to intercourse, the forcible extracting of the right is inconsistent with the moral and ethical teachings of the Quran. (30:21, 4:19)
